The Canada-Wide Peace and Justice Network (CWPJN) urges people right across Canada to resist the upcoming G7 Leaders’ Summit, hosted by Canada in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15-17, 2025. The G7, initiated by two neo-colonial powers, namely, the UK and France, was designed to be a club of the world’s richest capitalist countries to maintain domination of over the other seven billion inhabitants of the planet. Made up of the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Italy, the G7 has no basis whatsoever in international law, is outside the UN Charter, and is in fact a challenge to the rule of law. Canada should take no part in this cabal of countries responsible for centuries of brutal imperialism and for inflicting poverty, death, and destruction on oppressed nations today through their wars, occupations, and unilateral economic sanctions.
Ahead of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, in March 2025, a Joint Statement of the G7 Foreign Ministers was released. This statement attempts to portray the G7 as a force for peace while it is clearly pro-war.
Some lowlights of the Joint Statement:
- Paying lip service to “Middle East peace, stability and prosperity”, it affirms “Israel’s inherent right to defend itself”, making no mention of the Israeli genocide in Gaza, condemned by the International Court of Justice, the highest court in the world, committed by the apartheid Israeli regime with weapons, funding, and political support from G7 countries;
- Allegedly supporting the people of Syria and Lebanon, it makes no mention of Israel’s continued airstrikes and military incursions against both countries, (plus Yemen) with the support of G7 members;
- Calling for Ukraine’s “prosperity and security”, it fails to note that the US, UK, and Canada orchestrated the 2014 coup in Ukraine, and armed Ukrainian neo-Nazi militias in their attacks against the Donbas region, which killed over 14,000 people in 7 years. G7 countries, such as France and Germany, undermined the Minsk Accords, not only provoking the conflict with Russia, but also continuing to lay waste to Ukraine with increasing(!) funding and arms deliveries to the Zelensky government;
- Referring to restoring “democracy, security and stability” in Haiti, it ignores that three G7 members, (the US, Canada and France) are responsible for the recent political and economic crisis in Haiti because of their conspiracy to overthrow Haiti’s democratically-elected President Aristide in 2004;
- Espousing the “restoration of democracy in Venezuela”, G7 countries and especially the Canadian-led “Lima Group” have repeatedly backed attempted coups against Venezuela’s democratically-elected government and recognized coup leaders and US allies as unelected, self-declared presidents;
- Hypocritically condemning Iran as the “principal source of regional instability”, G7 countries arm, fund, and politically support Israel in attacking many countries in the region, including Iran;
- Claiming to stand for “peace and stability” in the Asia-Pacific region, G7 countries are arming Taiwan and constantly provoking China and North Korea by sailing warships off their coasts.
The next moves of imperialist powers for their war-mongering in Ukraine is likely to be a major topic at the G7 Leaders’ Summit, as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited Ukrainian President Zelensky to attend. The UK and other NATO and G7 countries have proposed a “Coalition of the Willing” to place an “international reassurance force” of 100,000-200,000 soldiers inside of Ukraine. This force will masquerade as a peacekeeping operation while actually acting to prolong the devastating war in that country. The Canada-Wide Peace and Justice Network stands firmly against the deployment of Canadian troops to Ukraine, as outlined in the CWPJN April 3, 2025, statement [HERE].
The cost of war hits home too, as the G7 Leaders’ Summit will cost taxpayers close to a billion dollars. Already massive military and police efforts are underway to lock down Kananaskis and over-police Calgary. While taxpayer’s dollars are spent to discuss war plans, Canadians face a cost-of-living crisis as food, heating, education, and housing prices soar. The G7 also incurs a cost to the climate. Aside from the environmental cost of transporting thousands of officials over great distances to the summit, carbon-intensive weapons systems such as fighter jets, tanks, drones, and warships, purchased at the behest of NATO, exacerbate the climate crisis.
Finally, at a time when US President Trump is threatening Canada with tariffs and annexation, it makes little sense to invite him here as a guest in discussions over how best to subjugate the vast majority of humanity.
Our Network, comprising over 50 antiwar, peace, and social justice groups, demands funding for social, infrastructural, and environmental needs instead of war, and an independent foreign policy based on peace, nuclear disarmament, and cooperation with all countries of the world. We also note, sadly, that not a single member of the G7 club has signed onto the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
To this end, the CWPJN calls on people across Canada to support all peaceful organizing efforts to resist the Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, demanding that Canada quit the G7.
